CAMS2_40
Regional air quality products
Overview
The CAMS regional air quality service provides near real-time analyses and forecasts of air pollution across Europe, supporting policy, research and public information systems. Using a multi-model ensemble, the service delivers daily air quality forecasts (up to 4 days ahead) and analyses based on data assimilation of observations in the models, complemented by yearly reanalyses that enable consistent long-term assessments of air quality trends and impacts. Within this framework, the CAMS2_40 project aims to improve the accuracy, consistency, and usability of regional air quality information, supporting applications such as air quality management, exposure assessment, and policy evaluation across Europe.
TNO’s role
TNO is a key scientific partner within the consortium, contributing by providing modelling expertise and (operational) air quality simulations based on the Lotos-Euros chemistry transport model, including its data assimilation capabilities. This enables the generation of high-quality air quality forecasts and analyses that feed into the multi-model CAMS ensemble. By integrating advanced modelling, emissions data, and observational constraints, TNO supports the continuous improvement of policy-relevant air quality products within CAMS.
Key partners
The CAMS regional air quality service is delivered through a strong European collaboration: MeteoFrance (consortium lead), the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI - Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut), Ineris, Aarhus University, Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC), the Italian Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), Forschungszentrum Jülich, the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute (IEP-NRI), the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway), and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI).
