CAMS
Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service
The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) is one of six thematic streams within the European Union’s Earth observation programme, Copernicus. Implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on behalf of the EU, CAMS provides free, full, and open access to high-quality data regarding the composition of the Earth's atmosphere. By integrating approximately 350 million observations every 12 hours from satellites, ground sensors, and airborne systems, the service produces 1.4 terabytes of fresh data daily to monitor current conditions and predict future environmental changes. This wealth of information allows users to assess historical trends and access reliable forecasts to address critical challenges, such as rising greenhouse gas levels, the health implications of breathing polluted air, and the protection of the ozone layer.
Serving over 2,500 entities—including businesses, scientists, and government policymakers—CAMS provides specialized tools focusing on air quality, solar radiation, and emissions. Beyond global monitoring, the service supports regional initiatives through programs like the CAMS National Collaboration Programme (NCP), which helps EU Member States leverage these data products to enhance their national capacities and decision-making. Whether identifying the sources of pollutants, forecasting pollen levels for travelers, or calculating the energy potential of solar projects, CAMS empowers diverse sectors to mitigate environmental risks and plan for a sustainable future.
