CAMEO – CAMS EvOlution

Overview

The CAMS EvOlution (CAMEO) project supported the continued development of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by introducing new methodologies and data to improve the quality and efficiency of its services. The project aimed to help CAMS respond more effectively to policy needs related to air pollution and greenhouse gas monitoring, sustainable development goals, and sustainable and clean energy.

CAMEO focuses on improving estimates of emissions and surface fluxes, advancing the simulation of atmospheric processes, strengthening the use of satellite and in-situ observations through data assimilation, and preparing CAMS to make full use of upcoming European satellite missions. The project also develops methods to provide improved uncertainty estimates for CAMS products.

TNO’s role

TNO contributed expertise in atmospheric modelling, emissions, data assimilation and uncertainty analysis. TNO’s work covered several areas of the project, including global aerosol assimilation, the use of satellite observations for regional air-quality modelling, the uncertainty of emissions and surface fluxes, and ensemble- and modelling-based uncertainty analysis.

Through this work, TNO contributed to improving the representation of aerosols and reactive nitrogen, preparing regional CAMS systems to use observations from new satellite missions, and developing approaches to better understand and communicate uncertainties in CAMS products.

Key partners

CAMEO was coordinated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The consortium brought together organisations involved in operating and developing CAMS services, alongside European research partners with expertise in atmospheric modelling, emissions, satellite retrievals, data assimilation and solar-energy applications. Partners from 12 European countries participate in the project, including all 11 providers of the CAMS regional air-quality modelling system.
